How to Get Started with Zelf

Five minutes. That’s all it takes to go from downloading the app to unlocking a car. Here’s how.

1. Download the app

Search for Zelf in the App Store or Google Play. It’s free.

2. Create your account

Open the app, pop in your phone number and full name, and we’ll text you a code. Type it in — done. That’s your account.

3. Add a payment card

Add a debit or credit card in your name. Apple Pay and Google Pay both work too.

You might see a small charge on your card (between 10p and £1) when you add it — don’t worry, that comes straight back. It just confirms the card works.

4. Verify your identity

Before your first drive you’ll do a quick ID check through our partner Sumsub. Have these ready:

• Your driving licence (photo card)
• A proof of address dated within the last 90 days
• Your National Insurance number
• A selfie taken through the app

It’s automated and usually takes under two minutes. You only do this once — after that, you’re verified for good.

Here’s the clever bit: we run this check after you’ve booked, not when you sign up. So you’ve got time to do it at home before you walk to the car. No standing in the street fumbling with your phone.

5. You’re all set

Find a car or van on the map, book it, and unlock it with your phone. Your first hour is £1.

What counts as proof of address?

Any document dated within the last 90 days works (council tax bills are fine regardless of date). The most common ones people use:

• Bank or credit card statement
• Utility bill (electricity, gas or water)
• Council tax bill
• Payslip
• Mobile phone bill
